Another lovely unsuspecting image from Katsuyuki Nishijima - upon face value depicting the entrance to a warm & relaxing kudaya, away from the rain. However, with further research, we can reveal a deeper & hidden connection to this image, much like many of Nishijima’s works.
The image depicts the Hisadaya restaurant (http://www.hisadaya-hida.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/hisadaya) - a kudaya which still continues to serve local miso/Hida-beef dishes to patrons. Located in (Hida-)Takayama, Gifu prefecture, the building continues to stand within the preserved, historic district of Sanmachi Suji. (See photo below).
