Notes: 見立て百景 "100 Views of Mitate": Spanning nearly two decades between 1998 to 2016, Nana Shiomi’s one-hundred print series delicately stages traditional Japanese “icons”/motifs synonymous with Japanese life & culture against earthen-red backdrops and perspective-drawn yellow ochre boards. Inviting audiences to re-interpret and find our own new meaning to antiquated symbols of Japanese culture; Shiomi fuses traditional Japanese and Western art ideology in an approach also aimed at echoing the equality & interconnectedness between all things. Additionally, Shiomi draws attention to the juxtaposition of a Western-dominated world and a deeply rooted Japanese mindset which is shaping modern Japanese consciousness today. “Mitate” (見立て) - the practice of seeing one thing as another, or finding new perspectives or meanings in familiar objects or situations.
