Notes: Okute is the 47th post town on Japan’s historic Nakasendo/Kisokaido 木曾街道 way - a legendary route famously depicted in Keisai Eisen and Utagawa Hiroshige's “The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kiso Kaidō” (木曾街道六十九次). Two routes connected Edo (Tokyo) with Kyoto during the Edo Period (1603-1867); the inland mountainous trail of the Nakasendo 木曾街道 & a coastal travel route of the Tokaido road 木曾街道. One of 17 Nakasendo stations in Gifu prefecture; Okute is celebrated for its prefectural Natural Monument - a giant 1300 year-old Japanese Cedar tree which lies within the grounds of Okute Shinmei Shrine 大湫神明神社.
