Notes: Upon first glance, this image feels perhaps a little understated. However, like all of Nishijima’s works, the true significance of the piece comes to life when placed in context. Here, Nishijima depicts Chikubu Island - an island to the north of Lake Biwa - in silhouette, set against the backdrop of the surrounding coastline (possibly eastern coastline of Nagahama). Chikubu Island is another wonderful piece illustrating Nishijima’s close connection to Lake Biwa & the Eight Views of Omi.
