Notes: Fumio Kitaoka’s coastal scenes are among his most charming works. Titled 松尾漁港 (Matsuo Fishing Port), Kitaoka immediately captures our intrigue with two traditional Japanese fishermen untangling their nets at the end of the day. The scene is flooded with details that draw the eye: fishing pots, rope and tackle, the distant sea wall & pier, with the old wooden boathouse in the foreground - all contributing to the rich tapestry of the scene in wonderful colour. These quiet, quintessential scenes of Japan are some of Kitaoka’s finest & less-seen pieces given they are his earlier works, & typically smaller in edition size.
